OBSIDIO Casualty List Contest

The time has come! The title is here! The hour of your death is nigh!

As ILLUMINAE FILES fans will know, we ran a competition last year, giving readers the opportunity to get their names listed among the dead in GEMINA. Well, we’re doing it again with OBSIDIO! Hurrah for murder! What in god’s name is wrong with you people?

In fact, we’re running the biggest deathlist competition the series has ever seen! So now you, your family members, your pets (I’m joking, we’re not killing your pets) have the opportunity to be horribly slaughtered in final book of the series.

So, if you would like the chance to suffer a particularly painful death in the cold belly of space, read on.

Things you must do to win this contest:

  1. Pre-order a copy of OBSIDIO. It does not matter where you do this. Online. Local bookstore. Seedy back alley. Yes, we’re aware some sites don’t have pre-order buttons up yet, just be patient. 🙂

    Barnes and Noble
Amazon  [yes we know the HB isn’t up there yet 😦 ]
    Book Depository

  2. Send proof of purchase (scan, photograph) to: next step is VERY IMPORTANT
  3. Along with your proof of purchase you must provide:
    a) Your name. Not a twitter handle. Not a cute nickname. Not a forum avi.
    First name.
    b) You must also include the following declaration within the body of your email:

My name is [insert your name here]. I confirm I am freely agreeing to the use of my name in the series The Illuminae Files. This permission is for all rights and uses, in perpetuity, and I agree I will receive no compensation for the use of my name. I agree the authors and publishers are not obligated to make any corrections or changes to my name in reprints.

The really, really important bit:

That gives you three weeks to save up, rob a liquor store or concoct a complicated confidence scheme in order to get the cash for the pre-order.

We’re kidding. Don’t rob anyone. Ask for it as a birthday present or something, I dunno.

As an added incentive, if you spread the word about this contest, you go into the running to win loot. Just tweet or FB the following:

Want to get your name on the #OBSIDIO casualty list? Make with the clickies. THIS CONTEST IS OPEN INTERNATIONALLY:

You can also include this dandy graphic if you feel the need:

By doing so, you go into the running to win a signed copies of the ILLUMINAE and GEMINA audiobooks. Behold:

Yes, they’ll be signed. Relax.

That’s it! Thanks in advance to all you beautiful people who spread the word!

GODSGRAVE cover reveal!

Hello droogs!

The day has come, the hour is here! At last, I get to reveal the cover for GODSGRAVE, the second novel in the NEVERNIGHT CHRONICLE.

Like always, I’ll be giving away some booty (no, not that kind), so read on after the links!

First, the jacket copy:

A ruthless young assassin continues her journey for revenge in this new epic fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Jay Kristoff.

Assassin Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo, or avenging her familia. And after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.

When it’s announced that Scaeva and Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end them. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between loyalty and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.

Gladiators! Betrayal! Lashings of tastefully written smut! And yes, footnotes!

Second, the loot!

This contest is open internationally. It will run until March 31.

You can win a signed copy of Nevernight (your choice of cover), along with a signed audiobook of ILLUMINAE and GEMINA, just by tweeting, insta’ing or FBing something close to the following – pretty much just include the #godsgrave hashtag and link, so I can see you doing it:

The cover from  is live! Win signed loot and make with the clickies:

Third, Jay loves pre-orders!

If you’re super keen and really, truly wuv meeee, you can pre-order GODSGRAVE from the following awesome outlets:

Barnes and Noble

Book Depository

Finally, the cover!

Click the link below and behold the awesome. Huge thanks to the USA Today HEA crew for hosting the reveal, the amazing Jason Chan for his illustrative talents, and the incredible Meg Morely for her mad typographical skillz:

Signed NEVERNIGHT pre-orders

Nevernight - FrontDroogs!

I bring squee-inducing news! Turns out my US publishers are incredibly excited about the release of NEVERNIGHT, and want you to be too!

Every single pre-ordered copy of the US Edition of NEVERNIGHT will be signed by yours truly.

Yes, you too can now own a book covered in my illegible scrawl!

It doesn’t matter what retailer you pre-order from – whether it’s through an online outlet, or through your local brick and mortar store. ALL pre-ordered US editions of Nevernight will be signed by mine own hand and marked with a special sigil on the cover (see artwork above) that you can use to impress children and the homeless, forge my signature on bank checks and bar tabs, or bandy about to win the hearts of strangers to whom English is a second language.

To be clear, we’re talking about the US edition here. If you order the US edition from another country, or indeed, another planet, it’ll still be signed.

Behold, the mighty stack of tip in sheets I signed today.

I’m slowly but surely working my way through the boxes full of tip-in sheets my publisher sent me last week, signing furiously and listening to endless Stuff You Should Know podcasts to take my mind off the task. I may finish up with a horrific case of RSI at the end of all this, but such is my wuv for you. So if you want to get in on this sweetness, PRE-ORDER NAOOOWW.

Links below will lead you to the various online retailers where you can pre-order your copy of NEVERNIGHT. But remember, copies ordered from your local brick and mortar store will also be signed!

Book Depository

Thanks so much for your support! I hope you’re as excited about this puppy as I am!

Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 12.01.57 PMHello Droogs!

Been a long time between posts, I know. but I’m sure you’d rather me write books than blog posts. I mean, who the smeg reads blog posts anymore 😛

ILLUMINAE has been on the NYT bestseller List for 8 weeks running now, which is all kinds of awesome! Thanks to everyone spreading the word about our strange little bookthing!

SO, in case you missed it, we put together a video of our ILLUMINAE tour through Oz and the States, and you can find it here. As an added bonus, at the end of the video, you’ll find the name of the second book in the ILLUMINAE series. If you tweet about it under the hashtag #illuminae2, you’ll be in the running to win a signed copy of the (amazing) ILLUMINAE audiobook. Cast of 20. Amazing effects. The guys at Listening Library did an amazing job.

Competition will run until Jan 17.

SO, now that the name of ILL2 is out in the world, we can start to answer a few questions about it.

So here we go:

Is ILLUMINAE2 a sequel or companion novel to ILLUMINAE?

Both. Chronologically, it picks up about 5 minutes after ILLUMINAE ends. The book continues the story of the invasion of Kerenza IV, and many of the important questions asked in ILL are answered in ILL2, ie “The Hypatia was sending distress calls all through Illuminae, why did help never arrive?” and “Can there possibly be a dude in the universe hotter than Ezra Mason?

This is important: how do I pronounce the title?

Soft G. Like so: JEM-ih-nuh.

Is ILLUMINAE2 still set aboard the Hypatia?

ILL2 is primarily set on Jump Station Heimdall, the space station that Battlecarrier Alexander and Science Vessel Hypatia were trying to get to for most of ILLUMINAE. Heimdall, incidentally, is the name of the god who guarded Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge, which connected Midgard and Asgard in Norse mythology.

Yeah, yeah, that’s great. But I love Kady. Is she in ILL2?

I mean really in it? Not just a cameo?

Yes. She’s in it. Sassier than ever.

And what about the rest of the ILL gang?

Well, as you know, ILL has a pretty high death toll, and we don’t want to issue any potential spoilers at this point. So all we’ll say is that the folks who survive book one will be seen again in book two.

But the book is primarily focused on two new characters?

Correctamundo. Our heroine this time is Hanna Donnelly, the daughter of Jump Station Heimdall‘s commander. She kinda looks like this gal. Our “hero” is Nik Malikov, a reluctant member of a criminal syndicate operating out of Heimdall station. He’s kinda like this guy. You can thank us later, ladies.

Hey, doesn’t Kady’s dad work on Heimdall station?

So what’s ILLUMINAE2 about?

Official jacket copy will be released in early 2016. Until then, we can say we pitched the book to our publishers as DIE HARD meets ALIEN. Use your imagination 🙂

Is ILLUMINAE2 going to be the same format as ILLUMINAE?

Yes. Just like ILLUMINAE, ILL2 is a collection of documents, such as emails, IMs, security camera footage (and yes, Security Camera Footage guy is back in this book, too). But in the interests of making things bigger and better for the sequel, we also have a couple of new document styles in ILLUMINAE 2. One of which is going to BLOW YOUR GODDAMN MINDS. But we can’t talk about that one yet.

Where do babies come from?

Uh uh. Spoilers.

OKAY, that’s it from me. Hope you all have awesome holidays and a brill new year. Thanks for all your support this year – 2015 was one of the most amazing years of my life, and you guys were a HUGE part of that.

Stay amazing, be safe, see you in 2016!

ILLUMINAE – the blog tour

Illuminae Ray V6FrontOnlyA2A_V3.inddHello droogs!

Well, it’s 17 days until ILLUMINAE hits bookshelves all over the English-speaking world, and I’m as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, as some old crusty bastard who wasn’t my grandfather no doubt used to say.

BUT, today is the kick off of the ILLUMINAE blog tour! Over the next month, you’ll be able to find Amie and I pimping our warez all over the web, talking about the creation of ILLUMINAE, the production process, our inspirations, plans for the series, a bunch of behind the scenes stuff, and of course, GIVEAWAYS.

Click the links below for as much ILLUMINAE goodness as you can possibly stomach in a single lunar cycle, and much love to all the awesome bloggers helping to spread the word!

Mobile phones off, please. Hello droogs! It is that oh so exciting time of the year when I get to show off the cover of my new bookthing! Drumroll! Curtains! Many! Exclamation! Marks!!!11! ILLUMINAE is nothing if not different from other books, and Amie and I are super jazzed to report the cover is probably different to what you’re used to seeing too, in all the best ways. It’s actually more like two covers, that combine to form one gigantic robot super cover, all stomping about the city and eating busloads full of schoolchildren. But you’ll see what I mean when you click the link below. We brought visual aids! SO, we’re revealing the cover today over with our chums at the awesome Cuddlebuggery. At the above link, you’ll find:

  • The cover(s), naturally.
  • An interview with Amie and me babbling nonsensically about the book
  • A competition to win a signed, annotated ARC of ILLUMINAE

So, if you’d like to win or just admire the pretteh, make with the clickies!

This contest is open internationally.

Hello droogs!

So, as you might know, my partner in crime Amie Kaufman and I have a new book coming out this year called ILLUMINAE. You can pre-order it here if you really wuuuuv us.

Early reviews are starting to come in, authors like Marie Lu, Laini Taylor and Beth Revis are all saying excellent things about it, and some awesome bloggers seem to be really digging it too, so we are officially excited!

The first round of Advance Reader Copies have been delivered to our doors, so Amie and I figure it’s about time to give some of these beauties away. So, if you’d like to win a signed ARC of ILLUMINAE (of course you do), read on, MacDuff:

We wanted to make this easy for you guys, but give you something fun to do, too. Something simple that’d let your personality shine through. So without further ado, we present:

The first annual ILLUMINAE FILES .gif war!

To win a signed ILLUMINAE ARC, here’s what you do:

  1. Head over to the ILLUMINAE page on Goodreads.
  2. Create a gif review for the book. Obviously you haven’t read it yet, so just make some noise about how excited you are to read it (you are excited, right?).  It doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to have a million gifs in it. It just needs to be cool. Or funny. Or both.
  3. Tweet about the contest! eg “Want to win a signed ARC of  and  ‘s ILLUMINAE? Make with the clickies!
  4. Aaaand, you’re done.

You don’t have to mark the gif to our attention, or indicate it’s part of this contest. Never fear, Amie and I will look at all of them!

This contest will run until Monday, April 13. Amie and I will pick the coolest gif review on that day and notify the winner through Goodreads.

Have fun!
