Note: holy shit, I just figured out I can put animated gifs in here. THIS BLOG WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
Hello Droogs! Be warned – there will be many exclamation marks in this post!
Exciting news today! As some of you might know, I’ve been teasing bits and pieces about a new sekrit YA project I’ve been working on, and today we get to spill the bag of Awesomebeans™
Behold! (I warned you about the exclamation marks) From today’s Publishers Weekly.

So! Melanie Nolan is my amazing editor on THE ILLUMINAE FILES, and I’m super chuffed to be working with her and the incredible team at Random House Kids on this series. LIFEL1K3 is a book I’ve been playing with in one form or another for almost 6 years, and the thought of it finally becoming a Thing is an incredible one. Seriously, our shields can’t repel air guitar of this magnitude.
A quick FAQ:
That blurb doesn’t say much. Can you tell us a little more about the book?
Indeed. In the wake of an uprising in a post-apocalyptic USA, the robotic populace have been reduced to slaves, and androids (robots who look like humans) have been outlawed. LIFEL1K3 is about a girl named Eve and her best friend Lemon, who find a ruined android in a scrap heap – an almost-boy named Ezekiel, who knows the truth behind the robotic revolt. Shenanigans ensue.
It features (in no particular order) Giant Mechanical War Machines. Sexah Androids. Mutant Powers. Doomed Romance. Warring Corporations. Cybernetic Bounty Hunters. Sassy Robot Sidekicks. Rebellions. Chases. Escapes. Betrayals. Lies Upon Lies. Splosions.
My elevator pitch was “Romeo and Juliet meets Bladerunner, while Fury Road plays a guitar solo in the background.”
Is this the project you’ve been teasing on Instagram lately?
Yes. All those Mad Max and empty Red Bull can pics suddenly make sense, right?
Have you finished writing it yet?
Almost. We sold it on a 7 chapter sample and a synopsis of the rest of the series. I’ve got about 20,000 words to go. I want first draft finished before we head off to YALLWEST in May.
Fucking hell, do you sleep?
Sleep is for the weak.
You can add LIFEL1K3 to your Goodreads TBR here.

Jay – I’ve been following your career/blog since your first book for Pete Wolverton at Thomas Dunne. Your agent for that series was Matt Bialer. Now you mention Josh Adams as the agent who just sold your new series. Can you explain this to your loyal fans? I hope so! And by the way, congratulations!!
