Stick a fork in me

Kanji
.
A trifling thing, but perhaps worthy of note.
Copy edits on KINSLAYER are now compleeeeeeeeeete.
I started writing this book in around December of 2010, back when STORMDANCER was still at auction (trivia – the working title for KINSLAYER was EARTHCRUSHER). I  looked through the synopsis I sent my agent when I started writing it, and the actual book that you guys will be reading in September bears absolutely no resemblance to that synopsis whatsoever.
Seriously, if these two books bumped into each other in the street, they would have no idea they were related. KINSLAYER would be all “Goodday sir, how do you do? It seems you were written by an author with exactly the same name as mine. Strange coincidence, eh?” and EARTHCRUSHER would just bash its head into the lamppost and dribble like the red-headed halfwit stepchild it was.
People often say second books are difficult. They’re not kidding. You have your whole life to write your first one, after all. KINSLAYER is around 160,000 words, but I suspect I wrote about 400k to get it to the point its at now. It was a killer process. It was bloody and brutal and scary and relentless. But goddamn, I’m proud of this book. Reading it over during edits for the 700th time, there are still scenes that give me goosebumps. Still moments that just punch me in the gut.
It’s the best book I’ve ever written.
I can’t wait for y’all to read it.
PS: kanji above is for the three acts of the book, once again designed by the incredible Araki Miho. They are ASHES, TEMPEST and SKIN.

Congratulations! I hope to buy them both soon! It’s so wonderful when you get that feeling of ‘I really think I have something here’. Nothing replaces that gut-feeling that you’ve said something so much better than you ever thought you could. Keep growing and I wish you all the success in the world!

I really should be writing, BUT I stopped by to say, “Radical, dude.” (TMNT, anyone?) Someday I’ll understand exactly what you’re talking about. The sun will shine. Forest critters will frolic up to the window. The world will be a spinning ball of harmony. My second book will be prepped and ready to ship. Nothing will stand in my way! What? Forest critters didn’t frolic up to your window?
In all seriousness, congrats. All your hard work will soon pay off. Your loyal fans will read KINSLAYER. New fans will be made. You will take over the world! And then you’ll have to repeat the process for book #3. You know what they say, there’s no rest for the wicked. 🙂

  6. Man, you’re making the wait seriously awful. I wants it! Congrats 🙂

I have heard that 2nd books are harder from almost every author writing a series, so I believe you! Best book ever, huh? Well I’m ready! I was fairly wowed with Stormdancer so I will prepare myself for Kinslayer! Can’t wait and Congratulations on finishing! Do you get a break before you have to start the 3rd?

  8. Congratulations! I just finished finished reading “Stormdancer” and was blown away. Incredible book, right from the beginning. You did so much worldbuilding in that first scene and it all came in so effortlessly – just a girl on her way to fetch her dad, yet the whole setup was there in the background.
So I finished the book, came to check out your site, and lo and behold, the second book is done. I can’t wait to read it and I wish you continued success.

  9. Congrats! Stormdancer was completely amazing, but Kinslayer is even better? I can’t wait to read it!
