Kinda like bragging

I’m really not into writing posts like this, but I’ve been told by the Powers that I should, because it s great. And it totally is. But if this post reads like me bouncing on my own pogo stick, I apologize. Be assured we will return to our regularly scheduled program of self-deprecation and dick jokes shortly.
There’s these folks called Kirkus. They do book reviews. Their shtick is that they’re the “toughest book critics in the world”. Authors kinda dread them. The dudes have got no mercy.
They reviewed STORMDANCER last week and gave it one of these:

Which is lovely and terribly flattering and pretty much their highest accolade. They don’t give these things out often, apparently. And I’m told it’s a “really big deal”, which is great. I totally played air guitar when I found out. It’s awesome. This news came right on the heels of the revelation the STORMDANCER got a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly, and was also their PW Pick of the Week. Which is also super cool. But I still feel like I’m bouncing on my own pogo stick. So I’m going to stop. Right nnnnnow.
Couple of other things:
1. We’ll be launching the next phase of my website jaykristoff.com in the next couple of weeks. It’ll have a downloads section with a bunch of artwork and stuff, plus a section on the world of STORMDANCER, with maps and info on all the clans and a potted history of the Shima imperium. Which hopefully people will dig.
2. Those of you who live in Melbourne, or who live elsewhere and are reaaaally keen, the details for the STORMDANCER book launch are as follows!
When: 7.00 – 8.30pm, Friday September 7.
Where: Dymocks City Store, 234 Collins St
I’ll mumble my way through a half-assed speech and then will be totally happy to sign your books. We’ll have books on sale there on the night, but if you want to bring copies bought elsewhere, all good too. More importantly:
Afterparty
When: 8.30pm – Whenever, Friday September 7.
Where: Robot Bar
I dunno about anyone else, but I’ll be getting drunk there. Probably very drunk, as possibly Up To No Good. If you wish to get drunk and Up To No Good with me, that’s awesome.
3. I’m going to be giving away a few signed books in the next couple of weeks, courtesy of some of the lovely folks who were nice enough to blurb STORMDANCER. Amongst the prize pool will be signed copies of Pat Rothfuss’ THE NAME OF THE WIND and THE WISE MAN’S FEAR containing spoilers for book 3 scrawled in Pat’s own nigh-illegible script inside.
So stay tuned.
4. Entries for the Raiders of the last ARC competition are officially closed. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to the totally awesome people who put so much time and energy and creativity into this thing. I love you. The bride and I will undergo the unenviable task of picking a winner out of ALL THE AWESOME this weekend.
Thanks guys, you all fucking rule.
5. Eight weeks until STORMDANCER hits shelves. Yikes.
That’s it. Have fun, stay safe.

Will be skipping the afterparty, on account of Old Lady Tez has a long train ride home, but will be at the launch 🙂

  2. It’s a big deal, Jay. Kirkus is hard sell, bro.

  3. Congrats, Jay! That is awesome and well deserved!
And OMG, I can’t believe I won’t be able to get Up To No Good with with the Aussie’s. Stupid ocean. *weeps*
I’ll be with you in spirits! ;D

  4. I’m SO HAPPY for you!! Congratulations! Come bounce on your pogo stick in Portland, Oregon!

Brag away!! i did say in my very ‘Kirkus level tough to please review’ that you made a smashing entrance, I also uttered the tough ‘Dude you can write” comment. Look, I saw it when I read your book, of course Kirkus were going to fall over with praise and wonder. You wrote brilliantly. I am still raving, mainly to myself, but none the less!! Congrats!!
p.s. I didn’t enter the Raiders cause I saw how awesome everybodys entries were. I have stick people ability. Now if you can put in a stick people section for us arty stick people drawer..ers… then I am in. Seriously the level was awesome , I loved! the chicken who did the mock book cover with griffon on front….dude…. she was good!!!!!!!
    😀

Oh , can’t come to launch and afterparty, but Rock On!!!!! I hope you video your talk as for us peeps who are interstate and over the oceans, would love to watch a Jay book chat:D

  6. Ash B says:

Well after having a look at this Kirkus mob I think you deserve to brag about getting one of their star thingys. Well done, looking forward to reading this remarkable book.

  7. Kayla B. says:

Well, I already knew you were awesome because Kevin Hearne said so. (And he’s pretty much the literary equivalent to Bob in my book, since Tolkien is dead.) I have the ecopy on my Nook, but I haven’t read it yet. I just… *sigh* I like the anticipation and all. Anywho, congrats on all the stars, dude – I have no doubt that you’re worth every sparkle. 😉

Oh, um I think if I had one of those I’d be jumping on everyone’s pogo stick! Pat yourself on the back!! You did it! At least the critics say so! Just kidding, I know we’ll all love it too! Wish I could get drunk and Up To No Good at your release party but I live a half a world away! Have a tequila shot on me!
Oh, I haven’t reviewed yet because your publisher asked me not to so, I haven’t even read yet. Take that back, read the glossary. Was intimidated at first, but now, not so much. It sunk in and I feel adequately prepared to begin the adventure!
Given all the pre published accolades, maybe you should go out and have a night of Up To No Good before the release date. I think you deserve it. Your bride probably does too! Take a cab!
    Congrats!
    Heather

    • Tequila makes for an grumpy drunk, so I’ll stick to the bourbon. But I’ll have one of those for you if you like 🙂
Glossary is a good place to start if you’re not used to Japanese terms. But I tried to give some context in the text too, so hopefully you won’t have to flip back and forth all the time 🙂

  9. That is truly incredible. It’s okay to celebrate, man. You. Are. Awesome. I told you I predicted you are going to be HUGE once this is officially out. I expect no less than NYT, my man. Reach for the stars. You’ve already got one in your hot hands (can’t say little, cuz you’re like 6’7″).
While I will miss the release partay, I’d love to see you stateside on tour and shake your hand. I live very near Hershey, the place with the chocolate. If you aren’t allergic to nuts, I’d highly recommend the Golden Almond Bars. I could probably score you some Hershey Park passes, too. I’ve got real connections. Totally serious, if amusement parks are your thing.
I’m also looking foward to the new site areas, the map, and more background. One thing I loved in the first 3 chapters was how beautifully you captured the Asian culture. My experience is China, but there are similarities. I love the relationship between Yukiko and her father. Can’t wait to dig further into their many layers.
I can’t stop thinking about these characters, and I’ve only read the first few chapters. You’ve done an amazing job. You’ve set the bar high. Don’t ever stop nudging it further up there.
    Congratulations.

    • Thanks dude! Really glad you’ve enjoyed it so far, hope the rest of the novel lives up to the first three chapters. And I’ll definitely be making it stateside next year. I’m not 100% sure of where or when yet, but it will happen, this I vow.
As for NYT, yeah, not holding my breath. 🙂 I’m just happy someone other than blood relatives want to read it 🙂

  10. Alan says:

    Woohoo! Congratulations.

  11. Congratulations! Sorry I won’t be able to join you. Apparently the States are so far from Australia that airplanes won’t fly for free. Not that they ever did offer public transportation at low prices.

  12. Ashley says:

Congrats on the Kirkus Star! That is sooo awesome!
I’m sitting here wondering why the bloody hell I don’t live in Melbourne. GRRR! I’d totally like, try to con my parents into planning some sort of family vacation in Melbourne if I wasn’t going to be in uni. Sad face.
Totally anxious to see the results of the Raiders of the Last ARC!!

  13. Sam says:

Very…very awesome. I wish I could justify a fly out one day fly back the next trip for the release. A bit of me really wants to but another part…far larger and beating the first into submission with a seriously nasty stick with nails is cheap. Very very cheap. As such chances are I will sit waiting for my mail order copies and cursing the fates that I am too cheap to do cool things.

  14. Wow that’s awesome, congrats! 🙂

  15. Freakin’ cool! So excited for these 9 weeks to pass so I can finally get my hands on this book.
Unfortunately I don’t live anywhere near Melbourne. Pooh. Enjoy your launch & the getting drunk & Up To No Good. 🙂

  16. neyska says:

I’m sorry, you are now officially too awesome to be a role model. I’m firing you.
Seriously, that is way to f*ing cool. Congratulations! I’m reading the ARC and you deserve it. Wish I could come to the parties, but Seattle is a bit more than a hop away. Have a blast!

  17. dkartzinel says:

Totally awesome! Can’t wait to get my own copy of the book.

  18. So awesome and congratulations! Bummed I missed out on the last part of the ARC giveaway – my life turned to hell for a month. Sigh. I look forward to the book’s arrival!

  19. CONGRATULATIONS! That’s awesome news.

  20. Luna says:

    Congratulations 🙂
    Much awesomeness.

  21. Congratulations!! That is super awesome!!

  22. Aw man! I knew I forgot something. Something like the deadline for a competition that I had every intention of entering.
Congrats on your fancy-pants reviews and ratings, Jay.

  23. Grats on the shiny star! Time to work on the boss to arrange a work trip to Melb in early September…

  24. Bounce away, dude, it’s something to be super proud of!!!

  25. That’s awesome!! 8 weeks seems so long to wait for the release – I’m so excited about it. Please come to Brisbane some time so I can get my copy signed 🙂 Congratulations!

  26. Oh, how I wish, I wish, I WISH I could be at the launch party! I’m sure it will be awesome to the nth power. 😀 Congratulations, Jay, and I cannot wait to order Stormdancer for my library branch and my personal library. Here’s to you and Stormdancer! *raises champagne glass*

  27. claire says:
