Good Stuff

Just some quick updates this week. Sorry if I’m not my usual ranty-pantsed self. I’d tell you that I have no time for jibba-jabba, but only Mr T can say that shit without coming off like a twat.

My US publishers MacMillan have created an Advanced Reader Copy request form for STORMDANCER. It can be accessed by clicking HERE (It’s also available on the ABOUT STORMDANCER page).

In regard to ARCs, please be aware we have limited numbers, and I have very little/no say as to who gets them. I love that people are interested in the book, and I would love to have all you enthusiastic awesome folks get your hands on an ARC so you can spread the word (presuming you don’t think it sucks when you read it, of course, which is still 50/50) but I have very little control over this part of the process. If it were up to me, ARC winners would be chosen via one-handed knife fight, conducted in a massive flying arena, transmitted via Pay Per View and commentated by Jessie ‘the Body’ Ventura and ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund. So maybe it’s best that I actually don’t get much of a say.

If you don’t manage to get a physical ARC, STORMDANCER will be going up on Netgalley closer to release. And of course, I’ll be giving away copies on GR and whatnot as we edge closer to the launch date. So don’t get bummed out.

In other news:

Mr Patrick Rothfuss, #1 NYT Bestselling author of THE NAME OF THE WIND and THE WISE MAN’S FEAR has read STORMDANCER and he said some very nice things about it and told us we could put those very nice things on the cover. Yay us.

Ms Marissa Meyer, NYT Bestselling author of CINDER has also read it, and said some awesome things about it too. Double yay.

Ms Beth Revis, NYT bestselling author of ACROSS THE UNIVERSE read it too, and used words like ‘adored’ and ‘loved’ when describing it, so that’s pretty frackin’ cool.

Mr Scott Westerfeld, NYT bestselling authors of the UGLIES and LEVIATHAN series is still reading so STFU, you’ll break his concentration.

I don’t know any of these lovely peoples personally. We’re not on the same imprint, we don’t share the same editor. Patrick and I have the same agent, but believe me when I say he’s not the sort of fellow who would say he liked something if he didn’t. So initial unbiased feedback from some pretty awesome authors would seem to indicate that the book does not, in fact, suck. As you can imagine, this comes as something of a relief.

We’re building atm. A very talented buddy of mine is helping me (ie, doing all the real work) and it’s looking pretty great. I’ll be giving stuff away when we launch it in a month or so.

And finally, we’re designing the interiors and cover for the US edition of STORMDANCER. The US guys are giving me an extraordinary amount of input, which is very cool, and the book is looking swish. We’re having some kanji done for the interiors by the same uber-awesome artist who did my tattoo. In other happy-pants inducing news, the amaaaaaaaazingly talented Mr Jason Chan is doing our cover illustration for us. I’ve seen prelim sketches and the work he’s doing is… well, it’s kinda like this.

As a special treat, I wanted to show you a little piece of it. Just a tiiiiiiny piece for you folks who’ve been so cool along this road so far. Because you’re all fucking amazing, and I’m incredibly grateful anybody aside from my mum gives a toss about this little world that I’ve made.

But then my editor threatened to send the MacMillan Ninja Death Squad after me, so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait just a little while longer.

But it’ll be worth it, I promise 🙂

  1. I suppose it’s a good thing giving out the ARCs aren’t up to you with the knife fighting and whatnot. I’m afraid everyone would just die from the overexposure to my awesomeness in the arena.
Congrats on all the praise, Jay! It makes me even more excited to get my hands on a copy. 😀

Some good for news for everyone, even Mr. T! I just signed up for an ARC copy. We’ll see what happens, but if I get one and like it I’ll be sure to spread the word. Can’t wait to see the new website. You might want to have a fan section so fans can send in pictures of their STORMDANCER tattoos and such. Fans can get down right fanatical sometimes! FYI the MacMillan Ninja Death Squad ain’t so tough. In fact, I pity the fool who throws the first shuriken! 🙂

    • Dude, if someone gets a STORMDANCER tattoo, I will literally lose my shit. There are no words to describe that level of awesome.
I dunno, those ninjas have been working out in the off-season. They looked pretty buff.
Good luck with the ARCs! 🙂

I guess I should be glad it’s not up to you because I definitely WOULD NOT survive in a one-handed knife wielding fight. I’m severely lacking in hand to eye coordination. That’s a lot of NYT bestsellers praising your book so it must be good, right? 😉 You have so many things to reveal coming up, I can’t wait to finally see the US cover and your website!

    • I saw an almost finished version of the illustration for the US cover last night. I played air guitar so hard, my watch flew off. True story.
      It’s gonna look FRACKIN’ AWESOME

  4. You are mean. I would win a knife fight under those circumstances. Damn.

  5. Now that is a bloody cool tattoo! Anyways, request for an ARC is in. I’m holding thumbs. And I won’t need a knife to win any fight, so bring it on, bitches.

I signed up for an eARC, fingers crossed. I am totally in favour of the knife fight idea, as I would bring the moves I learnt at the Lucha Libre in Mexico city and just pack a gun.
Also, could be in Mel the June holiday weekend – are you guys about?

    • Bring a gun to a knife fight. Full marks for deviosity. I’d give you an ARC just for being a sneaky bastard.
Indeed we are about. We should drunk in the same room at the same time and maybe talk shit at each other really loudly.

I thought about asking for an ARC but there’s no real reason they’d say yes (I don’t have a prominent blog or anything) and I already pre-ordered my copy of the book from Book Depository anyway. I’ll just have to wait, I suppose!

Congrats on all the good comments and the tattoo is awesome! I signed up for an ARC, though I doubt I’ll get one. 🙂 It’s worth a try.
I also love the ‘ARC winners would be chosen via one-handed knife fight, conducted in a massive flying arena.’ An idea after my own heart. I always wanted a shared underground wine cellar with a catch match arena for working out who gets the last bottle of a good vintage.
    Happy writing!

I’d like to sign up for an ARC but I don’t have a website or any sort of internet presence (kinda busy trying to write something myself that I hope will eventually see the light of day). But as a fellow Aussie I just want to wish you all the best on your incredible journey. I’ve been following your posts regularly and I can’t wait to read the book. I have been wondering if you write novels the way you write blogs (which is hilarious and dangerously addictive). Heh. Any swearing in the novel?

    • And fair enough, too. Good luck with the book 😀
Thanks so much for the best wishes! My books aren’t funny – not really. There are a couple of (hopefully) funny lines for the sake of levity, but they’re not comedies by any stretch. I’ve been thinking about trying to write a funny book – I have an idea in my head for one that i think could be pretty cool. But it’d be a hell of a lot trickier than anything I’ve tried before. Comedy is haaaaaard.
There IS swearing however, yeah. Not as gratuitous as the ol’ blog, but I do drop an F-bomb for emphasis now and then. It’s the chav/bogan/redneck in me 😛

    Have purchased knife.
I totally stand ready to fuck you all up for my ARC.
    Bring it.
