Welcome to Bonus Stage

Well, cover reveal madness is winding down for the US edition of STORMDANCER, and I’m all JFK in Dallas at the enthusiastic response my baby got. Totally blown away. Ba-doom tissssssssh.

I tried to reply to every comment and every tweet – if i missed you, it wasn’t a snub, I was just bombarded with squeeeeee. Which was fucking awesome. I love you guys. In the pants.

I had a few people ask for the raw cover illustration to use as desktop pics on their PCs (which is mind-bendingly cool when I think about it), so I thought I’d post them here for anyone else who feels the urge to decorate their phone or desktop with Stormdancer-y goodness. I’ve also got an iPhone screen version, coz, you know, who wouldn’t want a telepathic Japanese gal with a kick-ass full sleeve tattoo on their phone?

I think you need to click the pics for the full size version. Then right click to save. Then walk widdershins and sacrifice a fluffy kitten to the Blood God. I’m not sure it’ll do any good, but less cats on the planet is always a plus.

STORMDANCER US cover reveal

Exciting times!

OK folks, hello and welcome to the US cover reveal for STORMDANCER! While I’m tempted to rant about how awesome it is, that’s kinda the the author equivalent of buying a new suit and walking around with your hand constantly down your trousers – it doesn’t matter how sharp the threads are, you still look like a wanker. So instead, I’ll give you the details and get out of the way so you can see the damn cover already.

STORMDANCER’s cover is launching on ten sites today.

First up:

The mighty Tor are hosting the reveal, plus an article from myself and our stonkingly awesome illustrator Mr Jason Chan about how the cover got made. We talk about griffin wieners. It’s awesome. I think they’re also giving away STUFF.

PLUS, the following book blogs are also hosting the cover reveal:

The Book Smugglers

Presenting Lenore

Mundie Moms

Badass Bookie

Why should you visit those blogs when the cover is the same on every one? Two reasons:

First – EVERY ONE of the above book blogs is hosting an ARC giveaway. That’s NINE ARCs of Stormdancer up for grabs. Each site has details on how to enter their own giveaway.

Second – The STORMDANCER uber giveaway

Each of those nine blogs contains a quiz question. They’re pretty easy – you’ll find the answers in the Stormdancer synopsis. Follow these three steps:

  1. Get the nine answers
  2. Mail them to me at
  3. Win (hopefully)

Okay, so what do you win?

  • A signed, annotated ARC of STORMDANCER. This ARC contains a bunch of little factoids and musings from me, scribbled in my near-illegible handwriting. Perfect for propping up wobbly tables, lighting fires in cold winter months, and squashing small, scuttling insectoid lifeforms.
  • A signed print of Jason Chan’s 100% awesome cover illustration (just the artwork, no type to get in the way of the awesome). Hang it on the wall and bathe in the aura of badassery.
  • A signed copy of THE LITTLE STORMDANCER. This was a picture book I did for my UK editor when she had her first baby. It’s like an MG version of Stormdancer, with far less death and sex. It also has a happy ending. People think it’s cute. You may too. There’s only, like, 20 in the entire world.
  • A PDF of a short story I wrote in the Stormdancer world, called PRAYING FOR RAIN, which is going to be bonus content for the e-book version of the book. As it stands, only about ten people on the entire planet have read this thing so far. You’ll be one of the first people to read it, EVER.
  • My undying love and affection. Truly, a gift worth more than a thousand ARCs…. No? Awwwww 😦

That’s it. Answer 9 questions, mail them to me at, and you’re done.

If you’re laying eyes upon the cover has filled you with maddening enthusiasm and OMG YOU MUST HAVE BOOK NAOW, you can find the links to pre-order STORMDANCER on the About Stormdancer page. It’s on Goodreads here.

If you want to keep up with news about STORMDANCER, follow me on Facebook or Twitter.

That’s it. Comments welcome below. Thanks for visiting!

You know that time when you were a kid and you snuck downstairs on Christmas eve looking for Santa Claus, and instead found your dad in his underwear, scratching his arse, knocking back the brandy you’d left for St Nic and feeding the carrots you’d left for the “reindeer” to the dog? Remember when, after months of ground work, you finally hooked up with the girl/boy of your dreams at that party and they got so drunk they passed out mid-snog and then vomited on your shoes? Remember that time you saw a George Lucas film made any time in the last 20 years?

Disappointment, my friends. Disappointment. That feeling like you’d just scaled Mount Everest, only to discover a 7-11 and a Denny’s have already set up shop on the summit.

It’s part of life. Happens to everyone. And I’m sorry to say, I’ll be adding to the load this week. I know I promised you all a US cover reveal for Stormdancer this Friday. But, due to a vicious kung-fu battle that took place in the design studio of SMP (there were ninjas) we were afraid we wouldn’t get the artwork to all the fantabulous bloggers who are helping us with the reveal in time. We didn’t want to screw these awesome, generous people around, so just to be safe, we pushed back the date a week.

So, no cover for you on Friday. The cover reveal will now be happening on the 18th (next Friday). Yeah, I know. Pretty lame, Milhouse. Pretty lame.

BUT, at least I can give you the details now.

Ten blogs are participating in the reveal. Ten is a kinda ostentatious number. I could tell you that the cover is awesome enough to fill 10 blogs with the awesomeness of its awesomosity, but then I’d sound like a tosser who makes up his own words. But once we crept past the 5 mark, I needed to get it back to a nice round number. It’s the OCD in me. First up:

The mighty Tor (not to be confused with this guy

The lovely folks at Tor will be hosting the cover reveal, plus an article from myself and our stonkingly awesome illustrator Mr Jason Chan about how the cover got made.

The Book Smugglers

Mundie Moms

Badass Bookie

will also be hosting the cover and various drool-flecked rantings from me.

“So why the frack should I visit those blogs when the cover is the same on every one?” you might ask. This is an excellent question, young padawan. Bathe in my adoration that you are wise enough to ask it. BATHE, I SAY. Fortunately, I have a couple of halfway decent answers.

First – EVERY ONE of the above blogs will be hosting an ARC giveaway. That’s NINE ARCs of Stormdancer up for grabs. Pretty good booty for nine clicks of the mouse.

Second – I’m doing a mini-blog tour quiz-type… thing. Those nine blogs will each host a different question for the quiz. You get the nine answers, mail them to me, and go into the running to win an uber prize. I’ll have more details about the exact level of so-called “uber” in this prize next week. I realize making you drag yourself around nine blogs might be a big ask (but again, see point 1NINE ARCs) so this is only for those of you who are super keen. But, the prize will be worth it.

So, that’s where we’re at. Sorry for the delay. Hopefully, you’ll think the cover is cool enough to have waited for once you see it. Personally, I love it in THE PANTS.

To atone for jerking you around, I’m extending my ARC giveaway for one more week. Simply follow me on Twitter or Facebook, and you’ll go into the draw to win a US ARC of STORMDANCER. Clicky buttons below.

In the meantime, here’s a shot of some page interiors for the US edition of STORMDANCER. For the truly observant and long-following peeps among you, yes, that is my tattoo used as a watermark on the title page 🙂

Maurice Sendak died 😦

For those of you who don’t know, Mr Sendak was author of (among many other things) my favorite book of all time: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.

WTWTA is probably the mostly beautifully  illustrated book I’ve ever seen. I first had this read to me when I was around five years old, probably on an episode of “Play School”. I still own it today. I have WTWTA figurines on my book shelf in my dining room. I could probably quote you the book by heart.

I know books mean different things to different people. For me, WTWTA was an exploration of the concept of rage told from a child’s POV – the emptiness and ultimate fruitlessness of it all. It’s a cautionary tale about the potential loss that stems from unchecked anger. Nothing like it had been done before. It was brave, and it was brilliant.

I’m an angry person. I always have been, always will be. And though I’m a firm believer in the power of rage, and how it can be channeled into positive and brilliant endeavors, I always have to be mindful of where it can lead if left unchecked. I am Max – I’ve always been Max, for as long as I can remember. And whether it’s loud and screaming or tucked away in some tiny corner, there is always a Wild Rumpus going on inside my head.

Sendak could sometimes come off as very angry and bitter – about the state of publishing, politics, his country. I think you’d have to be angry to write the kind of books he did. He often lamented that he was considered a “children’s book” author, rather than just an “author whose books some kids happened to like”. He also expressed frustration that people only seemed interested in WTWTA, and none of his other books. I guess that’s the price you pay for making something so perfect. But he was a generous and genuinely funny guy, intelligent and cutting, and the world is a bit smaller now he’s gone.

But, he left behind something awesome to remember him by. And that’s something worth celebrating.

STORMDANCER by Jay Kristoff

The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, land choked with toxic pollution, wildlife ravaged by mass extinctions.

The hunters of Shima’s imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger – a legendary beast, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows thunder tigers have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.

Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a hidden gift that would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her.

But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

Now, before you jet!

You may notice that the US cover for STORMDANCER is missing from the pictures above. That’s because we’re revealing it next Friday, May 11. So you don’t miss out on the mountain of loot we’ll be giving away, follow my Twitter feed or Facebook page this week, and you’ll ALSO go into the draw to win a signed US ARC of STORMDANCER.
